About Our OpportunityThe City of Asheville is excited to hire a motivated individual to serve the citizens of Asheville as an Animal Services Officer within the Development Services Department. An Animal Services Officer's duties include enforcement of City Ordinances and task related to the care, control, and licensing of animals with the city's boundaries. An Animal Services officer answers calls and complaints, conducts investigations, gathers information, and issues citations for violations of animal regulations. What you'll be doing:- Responds to service requests, which includes stray or nuisance domestic animals; sick or injured animals; pickup of unwanted animals; animal cruelty concerns; dangerous animals and animal bite reports; police officer assistance involving animals; public loan of humane traps; and, animal permit application evaluations.
- Participates in stand-by duty.
- Issues verbal and written warnings and civil citations for violations of animal control ordinance.
- Obtains warrants for criminal charges when necessary.
- Impounds domestic animals found running at large, transports them to the animal shelter, and maintains corresponding records.
- Transports sick or injured animals to animal shelter or wildlife rehabilitation. Takes appropriate steps to relieve the suffering of the animal.
- Assists Animal Services Director in appeals process with contested violations or orders, develops criminal cases for prosecution and testifies in court.
- Completes and maintains investigation reports, case files, daily logs, shelter admission record, warnings and citations and other applicable records.
- Educates the public in regard to animal services, methods, regulations, animal welfare issues and responsible pet ownership.
Supplemental Functions:- Performs other similar duties as required.

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
- High school diploma or GED equivalency
- Some experience workings with animals is preferred
Licensing and Certifications:- Animal Control Officer Certification(Preferred)
- Driver's License required (this is a position that requires driving a city vehicle and applicants will have to pass a drug screen)
